Already at the beginning of the 14th century, the first rumors about the healing water Smerdžonka under the “Tri Koruny” mountains began to spread. Carthusian and later Camaldoli monks from a nearby monastery used it as the first in their healing practice. The most famous of them was the "flying" monk Cyprian, who, among other things, managed the monastery pharmacy. Thanks to his knowledge of medicine and pharmacy, he became well-known in the wider area. His most famous lifelong work was the Herbarium consisting of 283 plant specimens.
At the beginning of the 19th century, after the dissolution of the monastery, a local miller began to provide warm baths from Smerdžonka in his barn. He first heated the water in boilers and then poured it into wooden tubs. He tried to make the visit of the people who came to him to grind their crops, more pleasant and shorter. The miller became a small pioneer and did not use the spa from Smerdžonka primarily for treatment, but as a pleasant form of relaxation.
The origin and the settlement of the Spa status is mentioned around the year 1820. For about 100 years the name of the Spa was Spa under the “Tri Koruny ''. This is confirmed by many historical documents, maps and postcards, where the names “Koroshegyi-fürdő” or “Bad Kronenberg” are recorded.
The year 1887 was a very significant year for the Spa, as it was one of the most important spas and was included among the official spas of Hungary. During the decades since its establishment, the spa has experienced several ups and downs, and unfortunately it was destroyed during the First World War.
It was not until around 1928 that they managed to be reconstructed and reopened to serve the same purpose as before the war. Treatment in the interwar period was therefore continued undisturbed.
After the Second World War, the Spa experienced hard times again, and after a few years, the Spa in Červený Kláštor disappeared again.
In 2003, premises were purchased for the purpose of building a leisure facility.
In 2005, it was discovered that there was once a spa in the area, the beginning of the exploration of the well and the Smerdžonka mineral spring.
In 2010, the local spring was again declared a natural healing source, which started the construction of a new spa facility, named the "Dom zdravia" hotel, and the revival of the spa tradition after more than half a century.
In 2012, the modern history of the spa industry in Červený Kláštor began to be written, when the spa opened its doors to the general public and began to treat all non-infectious (non-transmissible) skin diseases.
In 2016, the SPA CERVENY KLASTOR Smerdžonka received the status of climatic spa, due to the clean air of the Pieniny Mountains. The scope of the Spa has expanded, and in addition to treating skin diseases, the Spa also treats other indications, namely:
The spa in Červený Kláštor is unique, because it is the only one in Slovakia, which in one place treats respiratory diseases and skin diseases simultaneously, and skin diseases and mental health.
In 2020, we obtained permission to treat diseases of the musculoskeletal - movement system and liver diseases. In addition we are able to treat children with skin diseases, respiratory problems, liver issues and musculoskeletal systems as ambulatory care.
